The wish to belong where you do not is the issue.
There’s a character in “A Whistling Girl And A Crowing Hen” that I created for some of you out there that just can’t win over a lesbian for your own. She truly had the inclination to be with a woman but lesbians didn’t want to be with her. Why? Most cases they thought she was straight, taken, uppity, or too timid to make a pass at. Just by looking at her one would just presume they would be rejected on any of those grounds. It didn’t matter if she was in corporate attire right after work or slumming on the weekends. On the other hand, men would flock to her in a gay bar. There was also the smattering of guys that would venture into lesbian bars and they would sniff her out. They could see none of the women would talk to her so they’d take pity and sidle up to her with an ulterior motive. It’s hard to make sense of all if it. Eventually, she would get loaded enough in the most refined fashion by not making a fuss or a ruckus and not being overly talkative and would make out or possibly have a fling with that so-called gay man. Then this guy would become her best girlfriend and pal around as a bisexual couple (in his mind) until he met another man and would leave her flat.
This character would make a valiant effort to go out and meet women by herself. It took years for her to make lesbian friends—all platonic lesbian friends. So, as her girlfriends tried to get to know her, they are so hypnotized by her mystery that they assumed she had a whole other life of lesbian lovers that she kept in various cities around the world since she was a traveling executive. They just wouldn’t believe that she was alone and she was too petrified inside to let anyone know she had longing and desire. She projects a façade of pride before desire.
Then the drinking would get a little too hard and the nights out a little too long and then it became her mission to have a woman want her at any cost even at the risk of losing her high power job. After all she is the perfect corporate model, sober by day and a vodka and champagne swilling incubus by night.
Eventually, there are some hookups with some lesbians but she can’t let down the guard enough to let a woman all the way into her life. Then the women slack off and she ventures out further to find a new crowd. The whole dating scene gets too predictable as the cycle continues for her. The women she meets still feel she’s straight. She grows weary of it all and marries a wealthy man who is perpetually intrigued by her stories of lesbian dalliances yet forbids her from cheating on him with a woman. She does it his way because in a stark about face, he’s never really convinced that she’s truly straight.
